La Chance Rocks, Bimini Roads, Bimini, Northern Bahamas
The chart and following text are from The Northern Bahamas Guide by Stephen J. Pavlidis
There is a cave in the southeasternmost rock that is 10’ deep and excellent for those pursuing underwater photography. Probably the most popular dive site in this area is known as Atlantis Rocks, or Bimini Roads, lying approximately ¼ mile northeast of La Chance Rocks in 15’ of water. The site was allegedly discovered by Dimitri Rebikoff, the inventor of the Pegasus submarine, but if the truth be known dive legend Skeet LaChance showed him where the site was when questioned about it by Rebikoff. To find this exciting locale (shown on Chart BI-4) line up the northern tip of North Bimini on a heading of 60º and put the Rockwell House on a bearing of 164º and you are there (for those who wish to cheat there is a waypoint for the site in Appendix A). On the bottom you will see a number of large rocks, some up to 16’ square and weighing 25 tons, that resemble a road and some say it is the remains of the ancient lost continent of Atlantis. Although this is purely speculation one thing is certain: radioactive dating of fossils found in the area show that this structure was above water 5,000 years ago and the rock formations themselves are shown to be between 5,000 and 10,000 years old. |
