Southeast Point, Mayaguana, Southern Bahamas
The chart and following text are from The Southern Bahamas Guide by Stephen J. Pavlidis
Many cruisers on their way to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, leave Abraham’s Bay and anchor in the lee of Southeast Point for a few hours to make a nighttime departure for Provo that is a bit shorter with a better angle on the prevailing winds.
Navigational Information To the east of the main island of Mayaguana lies Booby Cay. Booby Cay, besides being a home to brown boobies, is also home to a colony of small rock iguanas. These are the same iguanas that are found 50 miles to the southeast at Little Water Cay northeast of Provo. There is a small anchorage just inside the reef between Mayaguana and Booby Cay offering little save some shelter from westerly winds. The entrance through the reef is narrow and hard to find, if you intend to enter this anchorage I suggest you ask a local guide for assistance, perhaps Stafford Bain Jr. at Pirate’s Well. |
