Southwest Point, Great Inagua, Southern Bahamas
The chart and following text are from The Southern Bahamas Guide by Stephen J. Pavlidis
With the exception of the anchorage at Alfred Sound inside Northwest Point (see Chart IN-1), the only other place on Great Inagua to offer any sort of protection from southwest winds is approximately 2 miles east of Southwest Point in the lee of Molasses Reef as shown on Chart IN-3. I cannot recommend this spot in strong southwesterlies as I have never experienced those winds at this location and the local opinions differ. Some folks say it’s a good place to anchor while most say no, stay away in those conditions. I am inclined to believe the nay-sayers in this instance. I would not relish the thought of riding out a prefrontal wind shift to the west behind Molasses Reef, but since this is the only protection available I have sounded the area and offer the results here.
Navigational Information Round Southwest Point giving it a wide berth, at least ½ mile, and head east approximately 2½ miles until you are past the very visible Molasses Reef where you can round up into its lee. You an also pass between Molasses Reef and the reef-strewn shore, but it’s not advisable, it’s easier to pass south of Molasses Reef and enter its lee from the east. You won’t be able to get close to the southern shore of Great Inagua as the waters are shallow and full of dangerous heads and small patch reefs, but you can still gain some lee by tucking in as close as your draft and nerves allow. |
